Basic Genetics:Traits and Heredity

A while ago, SunnyD gave a link to a website that is a Genetic Science Learning Center formed by the University of Utah. We were given an assignment to discuss the 2 things we learned about in Traits and Heredity.

Firstly, this is what i learned about heredity. Each human has 23 chromosomes, so when parents conceive a child, then they each contribute 1 complete set to their child. In this way, parents pass their genes to their children. Each set for 2 people is half of how many chromosomes they have. Each chromosomes are contributed randomly so each child has a unique chromosomes. So it is almost like a mixture of different or alike chromosomes.

Next is on traits, there are 3 types of traits inherited from your parents: physical, behavioral, and predisposition to a medical condition. A physical trait would be your hair and eye color. A behavioral trait such as a dog's instinct to run after a ball when thrown. And for predisposition to a medical condition would be diseases that run in the family like cancer, diabetes, mental illness, heart disease etc.  But sometimes, your environment changes your traits such as your hair color, now hair color is defined by your genes, but exposure to sunlight for a long period of time can change the color. Also for behavioral such as your family, if you life in a good family then your bound to be good, right? Nope, it depends on your environment, if you live in a bad neighborhood then you will probably join a gang and get into loads of trouble. So even though you have good parents, your environment can effect how you behave outside which causes some of your outside behavior to come in your home. For predisposition to a medical condition when you are born with the chance of getting diabetes, healthy foods and exercise can lower your chance of inheriting it as you grow older.

There is more stuff on this subject, there is also explanations for things that you didn't get, games, etc on genetics so click here for more info
